Spekulor\'s Take on the Sony A7S

We worked earlier this year shooting some footage for iHEARTMEDIA with the Sony A7s and found it had surprisingly good results. The main cameras used for iHEART are the Sony 4k F55 which is a well made and fairly expensive 4K solution. Well the A7 is less than $2500 street price and with an offboard recorder has some surprising results:

•Over 14 stops of dynamic range that were usable and apparent.
•A huge iso range though the best starting iso is fairly high - so ND is necessary in all outside situations - From ISO100 to 102,400, with an extended mode that claims 409,600.
•SLOG profile - (Best look) range starting at ISO 3200 (so remember those ND Filters)
•12.2MP Full-Frame Exmor CMOS Sensor
•Sony E-mount - This shallow depth mount allows adapters to other camera mounts and allows for a wide range of great lenses
•Full HD (1920 x 1080) at 24, 30, 60 FPS
•Capable of 120 FPS at 720p
•Records to AVCHD, XAVC S and MP4 to SD, SDXC, SDHC, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO HG-Duo
•4K (4240 x 2832) full-frame sensor is cropped to UHD 3840 x 2160 for recording via HDMI to external recorder only (8 bit, 4:2:2)

We were able to intercut the footage using a rigged 4K recording solution that in future will become easier as we will be using the Atmos Shogun as soon as it is available. The most incredible part of the shoots have been the low light results with the camera. Almost unmatched - You can make nighttime look like day (with a low contrast look and very little saturation) This camera is a perfect run and gun solution for HD shooting and with some adaptation you get a great 4K result as well.
