BULLITT NIGHT: Celebrating 58 Years of a Cinematic and Automotive Icon
A private October 17 celebration will bring together film, automotive and entertainment enthusiasts to experience Bullitt as it was meant to be seen - on the big screen

On October 17, 2026, Bullitt Night will celebrate the 58th anniversary of one of the most influential films in American cinema - Bullitt, the 1968 Warner Bros. classic starring Steve McQueen.

The private, invitation-only evening will bring together a select group of guests from the entertainment, automotive, Mustang and film communities for a special theatrical screening benefiting Boys Republic, where McQueen resided as a youth.

The date itself carries special significance. Bullitt opened at New York's Radio City Music Hall on October 17, 1968, exactly 58 years before this celebration.

Directed by Peter Yates, Bullitt changed the language of the modern action film. Its location photography, restrained performances, Lalo Schifrin's score, William Fraker's cinematography and especially its legendary 11-minute San Francisco pursuit created a filmmaking style that continues to influence filmmakers nearly six decades later.

The film's impact extends far beyond Hollywood. The 1968 Ford Mustang GT fastback driven by McQueen became one of the most recognizable automobiles in movie history, helping establish an enduring connection between Ford Mustang and American cinema.

Bullitt was also recognized by the Academy. At the 1969 Oscars, the film received two nominations - Film Editing and Sound - and won the Oscar for Film Editing for Frank P. Keller.

In 2007, Bullitt was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry for its cultural, historical and aesthetic significance. The Library of Congress specifically highlighted Yates's decision to shoot the crime drama on location in San Francisco and the film's extraordinary car chase.

A True Theatrical Experience

For many guests, Bullitt Night may be their first opportunity to experience the film in a genuine theatrical environment rather than on a television, computer or home streaming system.

The screening is being designed as a true big-screen presentation, with a screen approximately 60 feet across and immersive surround sound, allowing audiences to experience the scale, editing, photography and sound of Bullitt in a way that is increasingly rare nearly six decades after its original theatrical release.

The evening will also feature a special guest MC and will bring together people connected to the worlds of film, television, automobiles, Mustang culture and the legacy of Steve McQueen.

At its heart, however, Bullitt Night is about the film itself - the people who made it, the automobile that became part of its mythology, and the continuing cultural impact of a movie that helped redefine what a modern American action film could be.

And there is a particularly meaningful connection to the evening's charitable beneficiary. Boys Republic, where McQueen spent part of his youth, will benefit from the celebration, connecting the legacy of the man at the center of Bullitt with an organization that played a meaningful role in his early life.
