KICK OFF THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH AMERICA'S OLDEST CHRISTMAS TREE TRADITION
By: Visit Mississippi | November 27, 2017
There's no better way to kick the holiday season off than a visit to Belhaven's Singing Christmas Tree. No matter your age, this is sure to Deck Your Halls because It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.
Mignonne Caldwell originally came up with the idea as a way to give back to the community. The idea became a reality in December of 1933 and became a yearly tradition due to its overwhelming success. The current tree stands 35 ft tall and now totals 100 people. Certain traditions have become expected elements to the tree. An auditioned soloist is positioned under the star located at the very top of the tree. This honored soloist performs "O Holy Night" near the Tree's conclusion.
This year marks the 85th anniversary of this special Jackson holiday event, which is considered the oldest Christmas tree tradition in the United States. Both performances on December 1-2 are free to the public and will take place at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
Belhaven's Singing Christmas Tree was name one of the top 20 events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society and continually draws thousands of people each year.
