The better question might be: What's the cost of not having one?
Introducing the First National Set Medic® Life Saver Award
We are proud to announce Ryan Perry as the first recipient of the National Set Medic Life Saver Award!
Every day, productions and events invest in equipment, locations, logistics, talent, and security. But one of the most important investments can be easy to overlook: having a qualified medical professional on site when an emergency occurs.
The question isn't simply, "What does a medic cost?" It's really, "What will you say when an attorney asks, 'Why didn't you have a medic on site?'"
At National Set Medics, we believe every production and event deserves access to professional medical care. Sometimes, the value of that investment becomes impossible to measure in dollars.
The National Set Medic Life Saver Award recognizes the professionalism, decisive action, and lifesaving efforts of our personnel who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to patient care.
A Real-Life Reminder of Why Medical Coverage Matters
While working a routine production in Hollywood, Ryan was called to a man down. Within seconds, he was on scene assessing a patient with agonal breathing and a weak pulse.
Ryan immediately began rescue breathing with a bag-valve mask (BVM). When the patient became pulseless, Ryan remained calm and professional, immediately initiating CPR and applying an automated external defibrillator (AED).
The AED advised that a shock was indicated. After just one shock, the patient regained a pulse and achieved Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC). Ryan continued providing ventilations following ROSC while awaiting the arrival of fire personnel for transport.
Thanks to the decisive action of Ryan's leadership, fire personnel arrived just minutes later and transported the patient to the hospital for further treatment.
From Ryan's arrival on scene to ROSC: less than 10 minutes! That is Life and Death when it comes to a heart attack.
Ryan's actions are a powerful reminder that preparation, professional training, and decisive action can make a critical difference when seconds matter.
More stories of rescue happen than we could ever honor individually. But some moments deserve special recognition. Ryan's actions exemplify the very best of our profession and why we are proud to establish the National Set Medic Life Saver Award.
Congratulations, Ryan, on becoming the first recipient of this distinguished award!
So, What Is the Cost of a Medic?
The cost of a Set or Event Medic depends on the assignment, required qualifications, schedule, and scope of coverage. But the value goes far beyond the hourly rate.
A qualified on-site medic provides:
• Immediate medical response when an illness or injury occurs.
• Early intervention while the EMS system is activated and additional resources are on the way, life saving techniques are being provided immediately.
• Professional medical assessment and treatment within the medic's training and scope of practice.
• Peace of mind for producers, event coordinators, crew members, performers, and attendees.
• A dedicated medical resource who can focus on patient care without pulling other production or event personnel away from their responsibilities.
• Medical and General Liability insurance is provided on all National Set Medic jobs. Not all set and event medic companies are the same.
No medic can guarantee an outcome. But having a trained medical professional already on site can mean the difference between waiting for help to arrive and having someone ready to act immediately. It can also mean the difference between a pricy lawsuit or not.
When Minutes Count, We're Only Seconds Away™
At National Set Medics, "When Minutes Count, We're Only Seconds Away™" is not just a slogan. It's our mission statement.
Our medics work behind the scenes on productions and at events nationwide (even internationally), striving every day to protect lives, provide lifesaving care, and improve the human condition.
The majority of assignments pass without a major medical emergency. That doesn't mean the medic's presence was unnecessary. It means the production had a medical professional available if the unexpected happened.
And sometimes, the unexpected happens.
There are moments when a medic's training, equipment, and immediate availability can make the difference between life and death. As in this case.
We honor Ryan Perry for his decisive actions and professional response. But we also honor the production that had the foresight to hire National Set Medics and provide medical coverage for its cast and crew. Thanks to all this, the patient will return to his family and friends.
