Matthews Studio Equipment is Celebrating 50 Years Serving the Entertainment Industry
February 26, 2021
For the majority of the last two decades I have made my living as a motion picture studio grip on sets, supporting camera and lighting. My favorite part of the job certainly is when it comes to light modification. Using different tools and techniques to move light around and paint the set with lumens is a real thrill and pretty magical. When the lockdown started I packed my car with gear from Matthews and headed to my home to produce instructional grip videos. Normally I work off of enormous trailers packed with all sorts of gear, but that was in the past. I had initially grabbed Matthews portable Road Rags Kit due to the fact that it would fit in my car. It was the first time I had to depend on it.
Being an avid camper had me feeling like a pro when it came to assembling the sturdy aluminum frames of the Road Rags Kit. The 18"x24" dimension was perfect for my closeups and for lighting unit control. The best part was that there was no guessing when it came to the textiles-they were the same Silks, Silver Lame, Solids and Nets that I have been using on set for years. All Matthews portable light modifying kits offer the same selection of studio quality textiles used in their world class gear. No need to relearn the quality of your diffusion, bounces or negative fill. Swapping out standard studio flags with the Road Rags and replacing heavier, bulky stands with these kit stands really streamlined my lighting package and allowed me to achieve optimal results on the go as a one person production.

Using the Road Rags Kit was truly eye opening. Its overall portability, right down to the rugged Cordura travel bag is certainly a plus. Most importantly, I didn't have to learn a new system. As soon as the frames were built up, I had the same reliable tools that I am used to working with at my disposal. I was really happy that the quality of the light modifiers didn't suffer due to their wonderful portability.
