A documentary film about the revival and expansion of Huni Kuin culture, spirituality and vision.

By: Huni Kuin | February 21, 2019

A documentary about the Huni Kuin culture, spirituality + vision.

OUR GOAL

After visiting for the second year the Novo Futuro Village in the Humaita River, Brazil, we are entering the post production of the Eskawata Kayawai film, a documentary about the Huni Kuin culture, and the project needs your support for its completion. The funds will be used to edit the feature film and hire professional for all post production and distribution, sharing the film in film festivals and screenings all over the world.

After a long process of rediscovering their roots and ancestrality, remembering their culture once forbidden and censored, the Huni Kuin finally enters a new era, the time of the indigenous right. In harmony with nature, they began sharing their healing culture around the world with their knowledge, culture and spirituality from the forest, their own cultural festivals where they gather the indigenous with the non indigenous, creating a great cultural apex.

The idea of this project was to make a short film that eventually became something much larger than once imagined, a feature film, having many interviews with spiritual leaders and shamans, participating of ceremonies and cure practices with the forest medicines. So now, in co-production with Marcos Vinicius Romão (Co-Organizer of the Festival Eskawatã Kayawai) and Ninawa Pai da Mata (Spiritual leader of Novo Futuro Village) we have a really special feature film in hands and we need funds to finish it, so we can share their story and bring their healing power around the world.

THE CAUSE

The Huni Kuin, who live in the dense forests of the state of Acre, after a great history of suffering and slavery, now live in a time of great cultural boiling. From the spread of their cures, his work with the medicines of the forest, their ancestral knowledge, complex and refined crafts to a rich musical production. The film proposes to bring a clipping of this indigenous awakening, of these new times that present themselves to the Huni Kuin, of valuing their culture and their knowledge.

Amid the materialistic times of a civilization practically incapable of seeing the human soul, focused on the production and consumption of goods, it is evident the importance of returning to the roots, of learning from the oldest cultures life harmony with the planet, with forests and with the spirits. Seeking this rescue, this project originated and we are already on the second year filming in the village of Novo Futuro, on the upper Humaitá River, during the Eskawata Kayawai festival of 2017 and 2018, event that brought together more than 200 indigenous people from several villages of the same ethnic group, pajés and txanás and about ninety non-Indians. The festival is an intensive of getting to know the Huni Kuin culture, participating of healing ceremonies, learning their dances and songs, preparing their medicines, getting to know shamans and leaders, learning their culture, about nature, about life itself.

THE FILM

The project is a 80+ minutes film with interviews with many Huni Kuin leader sharing about their ancestral story, sharing their culture, history, medicine, music and forest, showing them in their natural habitat asking to be recognized and to carry on with their culture that makes them who they are, which keep them alive.
The film will be
(1) Exhibited as a premiere at the 6th edition of the Huni Kuin festival Eskawata Kayawai to contemplate all of them who have been filmed and who helped to make it happen
(2) It will be sent to whom contribute with this campaign a private link to watch within a month period (depending on the reward selected)
(3) The film will be sent to film festivals around the world to aim to raise awareness on this cause, that is not receiving the importance needed from our own country.
(4) It will be added to Netflix catalogue so it can be shared with more people.
(5) After an year of film festivals, the film will be distributed online so everyone can watch it

THE BUDGET

After the first phase of our crowdfunding we reached 77% of its goal, raising U$9.773, now we are aiming for the remaining 33% (U$2787), also extra costs for new professionals involved and new demands plus all costs of the platform, rewards, posting, fees - a total of U$12250 which you can see the breakdown bellow.

The amount raised beyond the value asked will be going to support Huni Kuin projects in Acre.
The first project we would like to support is a Huni Kuin teacher that wrote and designed a Huni Kuin handout for students and need printing. We have many villages to support beyond Novo Futuro Village who are in great need of basic structure, we have a dream to support different Huni Kui projects as construction of a well, schools, buy them solar panels and so on, all money raised beyond our goal will be very welcome to the Huni Kui people in a direct intervention.
