It's a conundrum that many people run into when deciding to buy their first camera: you want a camera that will last a while and capture great video, but you don't have $2,000 to spend. Whether you're a starving artist trying to expand your horizons or just looking to take up a new hobby, don't worry: there's a camera out there for you.
My first camera was a Canon 60D, which I purchased for around $800. I learned the basics of cinematography on that camera and eventually used it for paying gigs until I upgraded. With the recent renaissance of affordable DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, you can afford a great camera, even if all you have is a piggy bank stuffed with tips from delivering Chinese food. That last part may only apply to me, but nevertheless, here are seven cameras that will get you started in the wonderful world of filmmaking.
Canon is usually the first name people think of when looking at cameras for the first time. It's a household name, and the 70D is one of its flagship cameras. With a powerful auto-focus feature and an easy-to-use interface, this camera is perfect for the beginning filmmaker.
Specs: + 20.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5+ + 19 point cross-type AF System + Up to 7 fps shooting + ISO 100-12800, expandable to 25600 + Dual-Pixel CMOS AF for fast focus in live view and video + 3" articulating touch panel LCD screen with 1,040,000 dots + Built-in flash with integrated speedlite transmitter and hot shoe + Intelligent viewfinder with electronic overlay + 1080 (30, 25, 24 fps) and 720 (60, 50 fps) HD video (H.264/MPEG-4/MOV)
To really see this camera's potential, check out this short film shot entirely on the Canon 70D.
Even though we've been waiting for the successor to this camera for a very long time, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera is still one of the best deals on the market for someone focused on creating video - with no interest in capturing stills. This tiny monster truly packs a punch, with the ability to shoot in RAW and Apple Pro Res. (If you don't know what shooting in RAW means, it gives you a wider range of color correction options when you're editing in post-production.) This camera also features the Blackmagic interface, which (in my opinion) is one of the best on the market. If you are truly looking for

Film production logistics can easily involve hundreds of moving parts that must harmoniously synchronize to minimize delays, reduce costs, and perform optimally to ensure a smooth production schedule without costly surprises or damaged cargo. Packair, the top film production logistics service provider since 1973, has made the logistically impossible a reality for hundreds of award winning film productions since its inception. With over 45 years of experience in international transportation, film production logistics, and customs brokerage services, Packair has advised on the following three tips for film production logistics excellence:
Too often does cargo go missing, productions experience delays, and rack up costly transport fees. Go with premium export services as it is a costly hassle to replace broken or missing items, especially those that are unique to a production. It is crucial to ask the right questions before you trust the transportation of your valuable freight with a shipping company:
• Why is this route the optimal route? • Will the cargo reach its destination in time? • Is this the most secure method of transporting my precious cargo? • Will you be able to advise another route in case our film location changes? • Will you be able to safely transport our oversize and high value cargo?
A truly experienced and licensed International Freight Forwarder and Customs Broker should be able to handle your unique film equipment and production cargo to any location in the world and back in a timely and secure fashion, without delays or surprises.
2. Verify whether your Forwarder has the ability to safely and securely transport cargo internationally by asking if their last few major projects were successfully handled and to where they shipped the cargo.
By asking your Forwarder a little bit about the last few projects they handled, you may learn something from them that you did not know previously. It is hard to trust the shiny marketing and sales pages that various forwarders promote without actually speaking to their representatives or shipping agents. It
By: FRIENDS OF MINE | OTTERBOX | "PASS IT ON" | March 27, 2018
Denver, CO -- Emmy Award®- winning design and branding studio Friends of Mine (FOM) and its Creative Director and Co-Founder Jeremy Lindenmier have partnered with client OtterBox to envision, produce and launch a unique, seven-part brand film spanning seven locations around the world.
When OtterBox first approached Friends of Mine for this assignment, Lindenmier was inspired by the global possibilities of this exciting new branding initiative. OtterBox, the No. 1-selling smartphone case brand in the U.S. and a leader in rugged outdoor lifestyle products, innovates bold products that deliver confidence and trust in any pursuit. OtterBox's goal was to develop a brand awareness lead-up that would be both inspiring and wide-reaching.
The vision was simple and clearly evident in their campaign. Entitled "Pass It On," Friends of Mine produced the unscripted story of an iPhone as it makes a one-way trip around the world. The film - which can be viewed either in its entirety, or in seven distinct vignettes - explores the journey of one iPhone as presented by seven ambassadors with seven unique passions around the globe. Yet, as seen in the films, these people find commonality through technology, ultimately becoming united through their authenticity, diversity and passion.
The Friends of Mine team wove together the stories and backdrops with a tight production team that traveled around the world profiling these seven social media ambassadors: A bull wrangler in Deadwood, South Dakota; a TV host in Mexico City; a chef in Brooklyn; an adventure photographer in Iceland; a fashion model in Paris; an art director in Hong Kong; and an artist in San Francisco.
The OtterBox series film "Pass It On" was recently nominated for "Best Video by a Lifestyle Company" in the Industry Track by Citizine Networks, Inc.
"The 'Pass It On' campaign spanned seven cities and three continents, making it an exciting yet challenging project to produce," said Paul Miller, OtterBox Creative Director. "Lindenmier and the Friends of Mine crew were strategic in making the vision a reality, bringing our concept to life in an authentic way."
Says Lindenmier, "Pass It On was truly a dream project -a great journey - one that wasn't complete until each stop was linked together to form an amazing short film. Our objective was to capture the different lifestyles and cultures of seven unique individuals and their own personal style that easily fit across seven OtterBox product series. It was quite an adventure, filled with inspiration, passion, breathtaking views, delicious food and profoundly interesting individuals. Traveling around the world to shoot these films was the opportunity of a lifetime - and even allowed us to check off a few bucket list items along the way!"
OtterBox debuted its "Pass It On" seven-part film at a pop-up shop in San Francisco that coincided with the announcement of the most recent iPhone devices.

Mailbox Toluca Lake seems like a typical post office box business with its exterior blending in with a row of other storefronts at 10153 1/2 Riverside Drive. But inside this shop it's a whole different story.
For decades known as the unofficial "Town Hall," it's where ideas for movies and shows have been hatched, and where there are at least 1,000 mailboxes designated to mostly people in the entertainment industry. There are rotating racks of greeting cards here and shelves loaded with stuffed toy animals. Of course, FedEx and postal services are available.
Most importantly, however, are the voice and throat remedies sold by owner Jonathan Kramer, informally known as "Doctor Voice" to the superstars. His products combat laryngitis, hoarseness and other ailments of singers as well as those doing voice-overs. "I've owned the store for 11 years," Kramer says. "I got into the voice business about five

[Alicia Vikander] is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father's global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he's truly gone.
Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can't understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious deathLeaving everything she knows behind, Lara goes in search of her dad's last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn't be higher for Lara, who-against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit-must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. -Warner Bros/Metro Goldwyn Meyer

Little Giant Lighting's New Video Shines Spotlight On Indie Filmmakers
SAN FRANCISCO - In the wake of the Oscars and film festivals such as Sundance and SXSW, San Francisco-based The Little Giant Lighting & Grip Co. has released their first short spot 'Glitter ' honoring the conflict and crusade of the ever-dreaming, ever-driven indie filmmaker. It's one part homage, one part call to arms for the creative community.
"You thought for sure you'd have a few Oscars by the time you hit 30, but times have changed... You decide to get a real job. Something still in the industry. And you tell yourself -- my internal corporate videos will be unlike all others that have come before."
"So you lift up your chin and you carry on. And you're reminded of what you once saw written on a bathroom stall at a truck stop off I-5: You can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter!"
In other words, pick up your camera - and some Little Giant lighting and grip equipment - and go boldly into that commercial shoot that pays the bills and gives you the means to make movies for a living.
What better way to illustrate that message than to produce a video of both creative and commercial value with their own Little Giant community -- 31 crew members, 47 actors, and 17 locations to be exact. It took over a year to bring it all together, led by dynamic directing duo Cliff Traiman and Jon Bowden. The result is a brilliant work of art that's already amassed thousands of views, likes, shares, and glowing responses.
So let this be a message to all filmmakers and videographers out there. This life may seem hard at times. But in the end, we're getting paid to make movies. So life is pretty good.
