Despite State Filming Competition, SCV Collaborates

By: A Rancho Deluxe | September 7, 2017

It's a competitive industry, but for at least the studios and movie ranches in Santa Clarita, there is an informal, collaborative atmosphere in place.

"It's best if we keep the business in Santa Clarita," said Steve Arklin of A Rancho Deluxe.

It's not just the formal film locations that benefit - a whole host of other businesses profit, he said.

Count among those the firms that are in the business - but also the rental companies, gas stations, hotels, hardware stores, restaurants and more.

Michael DeLorenzo of Santa Clarita Studios has sent over quite a few productions through the years.

"He sent 'Heroes' over to us once," Arklin said. "They liked the heavy wooded areas we had, so they could find a dead body in the brush."

Arklin's movie ranch sits next door to another ranch used for filming. The two ranches cover some 600 acres of outdoor property that offer a variety of backdrops.

Together the two ranches even refer business to each other depending on the needs of the production company, film bookings and setting, according to Derek Hunt of Rancho Maria & Sable Ranch.

It was Hunt that convinced ...READ MORE>>

By: ACME Made in America | September 1, 2017

Acme Made In America worked on the set for the upcoming FOX show The Orville. Acme has a plethora of experience working on Hollywood sets and their prowess shows on this set design for The Orville. A highlight of Acme's work on this set is the custom designed furniture. Acme designed the two Captain Chairs that were featured right in the bridge of the Orville. These chairs were constructed all in-house using state of the art laser cutting and metal braking machinery. The chairs needed to be imposing enough to look like true captain chairs, while being slim enough, that they did not compromise viewing angles of the back hallway.
Acme worked around these challenges and still created a fantastic set piece.

By far the most interesting piece of furniture design on this set were the crew chairs (seen on ...READ MORE>>

EMMA THOMAS - Meet Christopher Nolan's producer - for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in Gotham or in Dunkirk

By: The Producers Guild of America | August 25, 2017

Her situation is, admittedly, a little different than most of her producing peers. The "resting state" of many producers is to have a multitude of projects in various states of development or production, following the heat wherever and whenever it appears. As opposed to Emma Thomas, who at any given moment is working on one project, and that project alone. Most producers are constantly seeking and cultivating new connections and industry allies. Thomas' career to date is the product of a single relationship that spans her personal and professional life-she's the producer, wife and essential creative partner of visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan. A chance meeting during their first days at University College London blossomed into a decades-spanning collaboration, yielding not only contemporary classics like Inception, The Prestige and The Dark Knight trilogy, but four children as well.

If Thomas' role ...READ MORE>>

Pacific Motion Control's Beautiful Multi-Stage Motion Control Slider Time-Lapse

By: Pacific Motion Control | July 27, 2017

This very nice time-lapse shot was shot with a multi-stage motion control slider (linear mover) and the Talon pan/tilt head from Pacific Motion Control. The head was used as a repeat head and controlled by the Talon controller. The slider was controlled by our stepper speed controller. While this wasn't truly a motion control shot, in that the head and slider were not controlled by the same system and would not have repeated together, the shot only called for precise movement and this was a low cost and simple option. The DP for the shot, Dallas Sterling, is a fantastic DP who is very familiar with our equipment and just needed a simple system for this shot. We were happy to help. A Canon DSLR was used for the shot, and the zoom was accomplished in post.
