NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) Film Festival - June 24th, 2017

By: NewFilmmakers Los Angeles | May 24, 2017

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles is proud to present another month of incredible independent film talent. Join us on Saturday, June 24th, as we start the night with an eccentric film program. We are screening five short films that cover a wide range of narratives from a lonely girl trying to find her voice in the world to a 100-year-old woman rebelling against her aging daughter's demands.

Our next program of the night presents the 1st of 2 InFocus: LGBTQ Cinema Film Programs. This shorts program focuses on stories of love, connection and reconciliation by both local filmmakers and international talents from China and Brazil.

Closing the evening is the second LGBTQ shorts program that revolves around conflicts of identity, community and family. This program's stories include a serial killer on the hunt for love, millennials who decide to get their lives together after one last night of debauchery and four misfits who make the world their stage.

These 2 shorts programs illuminate a wide range of the LGBTQ experience, contrasting with the common one-dimensional portrayals of LGBTQ characters. These emerging directors give more representation to the LGBTQ community by humanizing their characters and relating them to their audiences.

Throughout the event, attendees will have opportunities to mingle with the filmmakers, industry supporters and film lovers with an open bar at the filmmakers' lounge adjacent to the private entry of the South Park Center's 500 seat theater in Downtown Los ...READ MORE>>

NAB Reflections: Bexel Expands Clarity Lineup, Looks to IP Future

By: Ken Kerschbaumer, Editorial Director | Bexel | May 18, 2017

Bexel's big story at NAB this year was the U.S. show debut of its Clarity camera line which now includes three models: the Clarity 800 (which made its debut earlier this year at the NBA All-Star Game and was used during the NCAA Final Four weekend), the Clarity 800R with 2/3-inch lens support, and the Clarity 400 which is half the size of the 800 unit to fit into even more discrete locations. Given that the original 800 was only 4.7-inches high and 2.56-inches wide (and one inch thick) the 400 model is "fit in the palm of your hand" small.

"The whole idea is to develop a family of products with various sized cameras," says Craig Schiller, VP of Global Sales. "For example, the 400 model can record up to 240 fps in HD and 60 fps in 4K. But it is half the size of the 800 model and has more opportunities for usage because of its form factor. And it uses the existing processing box that is used for the 800 model."

The 800R, meanwhile, meets a market need for more flexibility with respect to panning, tilting, and zooming as it can use 2/3-inch lenses, greatly widening the potential applications for the Clarity lineup.

"The reaction to the lineup has been very good and while some people are surprised we are doing it they are seeing it is real and we are getting some questions from networks ...READ MORE>>

The Chinese Theatre Turns 90-years-old!

By: James Bartlett | Discover Hollywood Magazine | May 9, 2017

This movie icon lives right in the heart of Hollywood, and is about to turn 90 years old - but she's still as famous as ever, and millions of people come to visit every year. Some have even signed their name and squished their hands and feet right in her forecourt, while others have left behind the imprint of a dreadlock, a nose, a leg and a fist over the years too.

Other nights there's the flash of paparazzi cameras and a roll of red carpet as smiling celebrities wave at fans before heading into the historical legend that is the TCL Chinese Theatre, a glamorous picture palace that held Oscar ceremonies in 1944, 1945 and 1946, and has hosted glittering premieres for decades.

Surprisingly, many people who visit this grande dame don't realize she's not an elaborate prop, a theme park ride or restaurant. In fact she's always been a working movie theater where you can buy a bucket of popcorn and go see the latest blockbuster, or even take a behind-the-scenes tour.

To celebrate the 90th Anniversary, the Chinese Theatre is finally getting her own closeup in a series of monthly, one-night only movies set at the "old-fashioned" price of just $5 per show.

All the screenings are planned to take place in the breathtaking main auditorium, and the series began with ultimate musical Singin' in the Rain in February. Future movies include The Aviator (with Leonardo DiCarprio), A Star ...READ MORE>>

Travel & Leisure Magazine Explores New York City's Biggest Prop House... Eclectic / Encore Props

By: Eclectic / Encore | Travel + Leisure | March 17, 2017

Eclectic/Encore contains more than 1 million props in a discreet Long Island City warehouse. In the basement of a three-story warehouse in Long Island City, among an array of life-sized, open-mouthed plastic shark heads, Suri Bieler notices that something is missing.

A small rubber shark she had rented to the film "Sharknado 2" was gone, never returned with the rest of the fake fishes she had lent to the science-fiction disaster flick. "Maybe it's in 'Sharknado 3,'" she said, smiling. A slightly chipped Egyptian Phoenix sculpture crouches nearby, not far from a set of larger-than-life Russian nesting dolls and a mechanical Zoltan fortune-teller. Venetian furniture, Versailles-style chaise lounges, and 1950s-era desks fight for space on the floors above while Moroccan-style cushions and Chinese wall hangings are barely contained in in their designated areas.

PwC expects this figure to grow to 35.33 billion in 2019 (Statista). Top 5 Ways to Save Money on Your Next Film Production

By: PACKAIR | February 7, 2017

1. Rent!

Without owning, you won't have to stick to any particular production equipment over long periods of time. You have the flexibility and freedom to employ the newest lenses, grips, lighting and sound gear on the block, month to month. Renting does not necessarily mean you will instantly save money compared to owning your own equipment. The most challenging renting question is - "what do you want versus what do you need?" The reason behind this perspective is to be mindful of whether or not the more expensive equipment will truly make a difference in what you are shooting. In business terms, return on investment (ROI) can be your renting compass when it comes to those tough decisions. Don't forget to get insurance on just about everything. The worst setback during the production process is suffering an expensive mistake that could have been prevented with simply buying insurance.

2. Master Logistics!

Organization and scheduling every detail is key. Knowing exactly what you need for how long will save you not only money but a lot of hassle when managing so many moving parts. Contacting a professional Logistics agent may assist with saving you future hassle. Packair ...READ MORE>>
