Shooting aerials is expensive. Everybody charges about the same so trying to cut budget corners is not the answer. Equipment, pilots, technicians and cameramen: Working with the best is efficient and cost effective. Even though Gyron is the newest airborne gyrostabilized gimbal on the market, Gyron Systems International is anything but new to the business. We were among the pioneers of gyrostabilized aerial shooting. Over two decades ago GSI president Dan Wolfe was providing a helicopter for KCAL-9, a Disney owned Los Angeles TV station, through his company, Wolfe Air Aviation. Previously this station, like others, outfitted their helicopters with cameramen using a hand held (semi-stabilized with Schwimm) video camera shooting out of an open door. Wolfe Air, and Dan as a director, had previously used a system called the Gyrosphere for a variety of commercial film work. Its availability and reliability was extremely limited. In searching for an alternative Dan discovered a small Canadian company, Istec, which manufactured a camera system called the Wescam. Wolfe and Istec formed an alliance establishing Pasadena Camera, another Wolfe company, as the exclusive Western-US Wescam operator/distributor. Dan’s involvement took the film Wescam from 2 or 3 shoot days a year, to 5 plus days per week. A video version of the Wescam was then installed on the Wolfe Air helicopter and the world had its first truly gyrostablized aerial news video. Always looking for ways to improve aerial image making applications, Dan teamed up with electro-optical genius Bob Nettmann. Bob is a multiple recipient of Emmys and Technical Achievement Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Bob also designed the incredible Vectorvision camera system installed in Wolfe Air’s Learjet (see www.wolfeair.com for details). As HI DEF evolved into the preferred aerial format, Gyron continued to perfect and adapt. Renowned aerospace engineers Brad Fritzel and Dave Hiley added to the mix and the result is the Gyron 945 utilizing, among others, Sony’s F23/F35 and the Red. No other system even comes close to matching GYRON’s capabilities, performance or reliability. The best part is that its rental rate is the same as all of the inferior gyrostabilized systems (see www.gyron.com for details). Gyron Systems International is headquartered in Pasadena, California, and conducts national and international flight operations out of Wolfe Air bases at Van Nuys and Whiteman airports. |
