Stock footage is film or video not shot specifically for use in any one particular film or video. Scenes included might be overviews of a particular city to establish a location in a film, or an airplane in flight. These shots would be much more costly budget-wise if the production company decided to shoot them on their own. Stock footage companies maintain large libraries of generic footage for this purpose.
